Fly Away Jack

Jack left today with his new buddy Alex who was accompanied by his mom Becky and Aunt Ruth. Jack was on his best behavior, except when he got a bath which Alex got to do with Drew. After that he showed how quickly he can fall asleep and be the perfect little angel. They didn't know that he had been running with Pixie outside, wrestling with her inside and running like a madman through the house for an hour before they got here :-) Anyway, the bath was a perfect opportunity to show how though they can be sweet and accepting, it takes work and patience to get them that way. They have to learn that sometimes things just have to be done and that they can have positive side effects like treats and cuddling but sometimes you just have to take it and move on. Alex is just the young man for the job.

I have loved almost every minute of getting these boys started. Who can enjoy a 430 am wake up call? I look forward to many wonderful updates over the years to come. Kelsey has already sent an update on Quixx (FKA Nimble-green). The transition to their home has gone very smoothly and he is settling in beautifully. There is a little controversy on who his favorite family member is right now but I'm sure they will all feel like they have a special place with him.

I must again thank Debbie, Kevin and Alycia for allowing McCoy to be the Baby Daddy. These have been a wonderful bunch to raise. I can't wait to see how their little futures pan out. I have a special shout out to my weekly weighing partner Terri. She has been a great addition to my puppy raising plan.

This is my last post about the McPixies. I hear Ash will have his own blog so I will link to that when it is available. The new background is called Aloha which I think is appropriate. Aloha McPixies. Otherwise, until next time.....Give your own pups a hug and see you McLater!

Jack's Last Night

Even though Henry has played with the pups all of the time this is one of the only pics I've been able to take. They were watching a football game. Apparently it wasn't that exciting.

Jack had some kind of last day. Some play. Some crate time. Some xpen time. Some outdoor time. Some sleep time. Some lap time. Some wrestle time. Inbetween and during all of that he barked, bit, jumped, ate, dug, climbed, screeched, and snored. What a fun little pup. So essentially today was the first day of being on the road to being a good big boy. Lots of lessons learned, lots of fun to be had. Jack leaves tomorrow. Even with Pixie here our house will be too quiet. But Roady will be happy once again that everything is back to normal with no rotten pups around :-)

The boys are growing by leaps and bounds. I can't believe how big they are. Pixie is so going to miss them. She plays with them constantly. She still pinpoints Quick (blue) more than the other two. Kind of funny. He has been the not so obvious boss of the little McPack. Today they had lots of play sessions and met my cousin, Lane's border collie Roni. Roni was a little overwhelmed when she first got pounced on by three little hooligans but she was wonderful especially when they were one-on-one. Lane is getting her own BC puppy in a few weeks so chaos is going to reign soon with Roni. I have been very fortunate to have been able to expose the pups to multiple adult dogs who are great with puppies so they learn nice lessons about respecting big dogs.

The boys are figuring out car riding. Tonight they were put into their crate and all settled in to lie down without bum rushing the door to get right out. They are now sleeping in individual crates in separate rooms. My sister takes one, Drew has another and I have the third.

Pixie wont be the only one to miss theses babies. I was whistling a different tune earlier today when 5 sets of muddy paws were coming into the house.

Leashes, Bujas and Tunnels

Today the boys got to go to my agility building and work on walking on a leash. No pictures because I was by myself but let me just say they were stellar pups! They walk into every place like they own it. Such brave boys. The leash work was easy. They learned quickly that treats come when you are close to me. They also did minimal chewing on the leash. I foresee 3 Best In Class puppies in their puppy classes.

The Buja board is just a continuation of the tippy board. They were happy to make it move and were each starting to figure out that I was shaping them to make it move. I somehow managed to get them each through a full-sized tunnel on my own. And as usual they had no problems going through it. I just can't find much that fazes the McTrio.

We ended out the afternoon with a play date at mom's house. Lots of fun to be had except when they tried to run for the hills when I was getting them back in the car. Bad Boys!

9 Weeks Old

They celebrated the end of Week 9 with a visit to my veterinarian, Dr. Joanne Buehner. They enjoyed most of the visit - a car ride, cookies, lovin', and people telling them how wonderful they are. Not so enjoyable were the shots and microchipping but they survived. They have been playing with my niece and nephew, going for car rides, sleeping in the crate at night and in general having a good time. They have mastered several kinds of stairs - Well Nimble still hesitates at the open backed wooden stairs but he runs and jumps on every other kind. I've tried doing some clicker introduction. They are catching on. Today we went for a big run since it was a little warmer this morning - all of 30 degrees. BTW, I can't seem to remember to bring my camera anywhere!

Saturday Visit

No pictures today but the boys went to mom's house today while I went to Drew's wrestling tournament. They played with Uncle Rocket and Gr Grandma Sunny. Apparently at one point Quick was being fresh and got a little lesson in just how he should behave with his elders. It is nice to have dogs around who can teach these lessons nicely but firmly. They also had more fun with greenery, a giant Amazon's cast offs and meeting with my nephew and niece who just arrived from LA.

Henry and I were laughing last night about how cute and gentle Pixie is with the babies - wanting to play with them and egging them on to roughhouse with her. She also balances that well with a firm paw when they get too out of line.

I may have pics tomorrow but I work a 12 tonight and tomorrow so no promises. Best to check back Monday evening. Have a great weekend!

Today was a car day. It ended up actually being almost a full day activity vs a couple of hours. Thank you BMV. I suppose I should take some of the blame since I am the one who let my license expire. But my one trip turned into three including a trip to the Social Security Admin. The plan was to run a few car errands so they could spend about an hour stopping and going with Gr. Uncle Roady in the front seat guarding the car so I could leave it running due to the cold. BTW, he did his part well. It turned into a 4+ hour lesson on the nature of car riding (in a crate of course). They were EXCELLENT! There wasn't even any screaming at the very start of our trip. They only squeaked after the 2.5 hour mark was hit but we were finally on our way to the park by then. So now I have a new license and a new SS card on the way (I lost my license and debit card in Cleveland yesterday :-()

On to the fun part. We went for a run in the woods. They are fast! I ran away from them keep them from tripping me and to keep them running and warm, and they almost were able to keep up. At the start of our woods walk I saw that a baby raccoon had been treed in a sapling. The big dogs were chasing a squirrel so it was safe for now and we started our walk.

Unfortunately the raccoon had decided to come down from the tree. That was not a wise decision. Roady had plans for it. The puppies saw what was going on so they have been indoctrinated into the thinning of the local wildlife. I managed to keep them away from actually getting to Roady and our romp in the woods ended

Time for our next stop - Wally world They were wonderful little troopers. I think they are well on their way to being excellent travelers.

Getting You Up To Speed - 8 Week Old Pupdate!

Mea culpa for not posting for the last few days. Work, sleep and puppies have taken up my computer time! Imagine that? Tuesday the boys turned 8 weeks old! The time is flying by too fast for me. They are staying until right after Christmas but that is making me sad - at least for now.

Soooooooo! What have they been up to? Monday we did a temperament test based on Sheila Booth's Positive Puppy Preview. Thank you Lianne for being the tester. This was her first one and she did a fine job! For those not familiar with temp testing, it is a series of activities to do with a puppy to "test" what it's personality is like. If you are getting a puppy from a breeder who doesn't spend a lot of time with the puppies (and who would get a puppy from someone like that?) then a temp test is a good tool for giving you an idea of what the puppy might be like. For me I like to use the temp test as a tool to give a better idea of what the puppy might need to work on in its new home. I do think that a few parts of the test hold true to the puppy - sounds sensitivity and touch sensitivity. I have tested many puppies in several breeds and these seem to be the most consistent behaviors throughout the puppy's life.

The boys were solid and pretty even in their testing as I expected. What they didn't show was their prey drive which is pretty decent generally. So, if I were the tester of this litter then I would advise pretty much ignoring the puppies' prey drive for this testing except to keep in mind that they like most vizslas can be easily distracted. They were very motivated by interaction with people - both with Lianne and at the end when they had to figure out how to come find me. No one was sound sensitive and Quick was the least reactive to touch. The video of the tests are at the You Tube link to the right. You'll hear the others screaming in the background but it was too cold to put puppies not being tested outside but I don't think they were too distracted by the noise. They hear it all of the time!

Terri and her Granddaughter came over on Tues to help weigh them and have a visit.

Also on Tuesday Caren came over to give me her opinion of the boys for a structure evaluation. They weren't very cooperative for stacking so that I could get pictures at the time. I just took some later. They do have minds of their own but at least they are very sweet when the want things their way - sometimes.

Well, actually these boys care about the cold and rain. It's not their fav but they will tolerate it if the reward is powerful enough and I think we have what it takes. Digging is getting pretty high on their list.

But perhaps even higher are the little winged creatures ... Birds!

After a romp through the woods finding the birds, they split up for a couple of hours of time away. Quick (blue) went to visit Susie and the girls. Nimble (green) went to visit Kelsey and her cats and his Great Uncle Vezer. Jack (orange) learned a thing or two at Wendy and Eds from Gramma Lannie and Auntie Aerial. Everyone had a great time and Pixie and I were very happy to have them back.

I'm a Travelin' Man

I've made a lot of stops...
Friday and Saturday were visiting days. Friday after taking a little nap I loaded up Roady, Pixie and the McTrio for a trip to the Alzheimer's Day Center where my dad works part time. The little guys went for some Meet-a-bunch-of-people and See-how-sweet-I-am time while the big dogs did a little agility, obedience and conformation demo. The puppies were a hit - Roady and Pixie were too - but who can resist a puppy? Even a woman who never pets the various dogs that go there had to pet these guys. The boys kept their teeth and claws under control which was a major bonus considering all of the potentially fragile skin in the room. I had several takers for the boys, but never fear, I left with everyone in tow. Amazingly, for as much of a spaz as she can be, I think Pixie has potential to be a therapy dog. She was good about sitting or standing quietly to be petted and for one man who was in a very large /high wheelchair she carefully jumped up with her front feet only resting on his knees so he could pet her. I was a little concerned it was going to be a full out leap into his lap but she was a very good girl.

After the visit, the boys went for solitary visits to various friends. Each visit was for a few hours so they got some time on their own, encountered a new situation, a new dog, and then got to come back home to mom and brothers. This way their first time to their new home isn't their first time away. Making a few of these visits helps make the transition easier and the puppies more comfortable with new things. With only three they'll each get a decent number of visits.

Everyone was worn out and ready for bed.

Saturday was more of a big day of running around for me than for the boys since Drew had a wrestling tournament that lasted all day. However, Quick (blue) went for a visit with Chad, Chrissy and 2nd cousin Rooney down in "the big city".

Quick had a great time meeting new people, his cousin, and trying out a leash.

Nimble (green) and Jack (orange) played McVelociraptor, and figured out multiple times how to break out of the pen. Each time I came home they were free. Nice. Well they had fun. I had a lot to clean up.
The original plan was we were going to take advantage of the great weather go for an outdoor field trip and play with some birds. Wrestling trumped that so we are going to brave the elements before it gets too nasty and go out this morning.

The pups are learning some more Zen training. What is that you say? Zen is controlling your crazy puppy behavior to get what you want. Want to eat but you act like a nut barking and leaping at the bowl hoping to knock it out of my hand? Well, for you my puppy friend, the bowl stays up high until you sit then it starts to come down. Start your little shenanigans again? The bowl goes back up and we start again waiting for calm sitting behavior. The first time we had three little butts planted firmly in place within 1 minute. Normally I would do each puppy separately but they are pretty quick to catch on and we've been working a little on keep your mouth quiet if you want to get out. Good boys! Everyone is the McSmartie today!

7 Weeks Old Today!

So now the baby growing up stuff starts to happen. Almost 3 more weeks with us and during that time they will start sleeping in a crate at night, being introduced to walking on leashes, learning a trick or two, eating from their own bowls sometimes in and sometimes out of a crate, going on field trips by themselves, going on outdoor field trips together, getting introduced to birds and all kinds of puppy fun.

Today the boys played outside and inside. Drew got a cold and came home early from school so there went my plans to take them for an outdoor field trip. Maybe tomorrow. It is pretty cold out so any outdoor time is pretty limited. Pixie showed them the joys of a Buster Cube and something like it that looks like a hard Kong that weebles and wobbles spilling treats out of it.

While they have been pretty soft-mouthed with people, they can be brutal with each other. Yesterday, Quick (blue) and Nimble (green) got into it to the point that Pixie jumped up and stood between the two of them. Have I said what a good momma dog she is? Today Jack (orange) decided that Nimble (green) needed to be shaken like a rag doll and that he could do it by grabbing the skin on the top of his head! Pixie had to break that one up as well but poor Nimble had a swollen spot on the top of his head afterward.

Monday morning was met with a very cold breeze and a little more snow. Not much to speak of really but it was so cold it was still there in the afternoon. Once they get out they have good time. It's confronting that wind when you've been all toasty warm in the house that is difficult to do.

Nimble is! This morning Jack was playing with Roady's 2qt metal dish. Nimble stood watching, pounced in, picked the bowl up and carried it away! This is totally Pixie taught as she is always carrying a bowl around if not a shoe. Did I get pictures of it. NO! But I got others.

The boys had a great day today. Field trip!!!! They went to Wendy and Ed's house for the day while I went to Drew's wrestling tournament. They had a ball with Grandma Lannie and Auntie Aerial. As expected they acted like they had always been there and tried to run things. Lannie had to let Quick know that she is Her Royal Highness The Queen and that she should be respected at all times. Apparently he was a little slow on learning that lesson. They played under the deck, had fun with Auntie Aerial and The Queen, saw Susie and the girls, and took some good naps on the couch with Wendy and Ed. I'll post pics when I get them. Thanks for giving them a great outing!

Last night I thought Pixie had decided any nursing was over. Apparently not so. These silly boys still need a snack now and then and she is willing to oblige! The nice thing is they really aren't too terrible about grabbing her so she spends a lot of time teaching them the ropes. So far no lessons in counter surfing but most vizslas are more than capable of figuring that out on their own.

It's been kind of a sleepy day for them. Nothing too exciting happened. They slept, ate, played outside and in.

Baby, It's Cold Outside

Snow this morning! Not enough to make much of a difference but it is COLD outside! They run to the door all excited to go out until I stop, then they slam on the brakes. I take a step outside. Quick (blue) and Jack (orange) run up the stairs and Nimble (green) turns around and runs to a fleece by the couch. Apparently he is the smart puppy who knows it is too frigid to go out. I can be persuasive though and he is small so scooped up he gets and outside he goes. We have all poops outside (YEAH!)

McHairy Puppy Play Date

The boys started off the morning with a visit from Terry and a weigh in. The McMountain Goats were a handful as you can see.

They also got to have hard boiled egg halves which they loved. They'll get to play find the eggs next time they get them. Using their little noses is great fun!

The boys ended of a perfectly nice day - great weather- with the most fun they are likely to have. We are fortunate that my friend Ruth had a litter of pups who are 7 1/2 weeks old. Vizsla pups do you say? Naa uhh! Keeshonden! Six hairy, fiery, playful, hilarious baby Kees, their mother Izzy and their dutch uncle Moon are the McSmoothies' new playmates. They had a wonderful time with only one instance where Nimble felt a little intimidated which he rapidly overcame and joined into the hour plus long frenzy.

New toy yesterday was the tippy board which according to the pups is just another chew toy. So much for exposing to moving surfaces! They had their typical fun day with playing, sleeping, and more playing being on the agenda.

Lazy Sunday

While I had kind of a busy Sunday the pups kind of lazed around. Well not really because what self-respecting vizsla pup actually has a lazy day? Their day contained a mini field trip to the upstairs complete with rug tunneling, couch cover tugging, food bin discovery; newspaper shredding, outside play, cuddling, chasing, nail trimming, almost meeting neighbor dogs ('til Sandy and Dino barked very scarily at them through the fence), shoe dragging (too big to actually carry), sloshing the large water crock, ice cube discovery, napping and the regular rough housing. Tomorrow we'll add climbing regular carpeted stairs. They have gotten particularly good about the ones outside.

The pups had a nice busy morning. Of course it started at 5 with pooping outside (Yes, I can learn), a handful of kibble and me going back to bed for a couple of hours. The boys have new digs for hanging out at night and when we're not home. Can't say that they like it anymore than before but they have more room and can make more choices. Overnight everyone pottied on the paper instead of the tile.

First set of visitors today were Kelsey and Patrick. Patrick hasn't seen them in a few weeks so they looked huge to him compared to before.

Our next set of visitors were very special (not that everyone isn't to us) but Loralynn and her adorable daughter will always have a special place with us since their family helped raise Pixie when she was a pup and I was in school. It has been almost 4 years since they had a v baby around - they are a border collie family. The pups loved the new toys they were given and played with them this afternoon and evening.

Here's how the morning has been starting lately. Please take note that the time is 4:20. Yes that is AM. Let me just say that they aren't that cute that early in the morning. They got tossed some dry kibble and made sure their water was full and I went back to bed for the 15 minutes I had left. The crying by Nimble and Jack continued so back to the puppies I went. Turns out that they actually needed to poop! Good boys. All three outside. They did get started on their zen program today. No one got taken out until they were quiet. Quick had fallen back to sleep so he was first (not much learned there) followed by Nimble and then finally Jack (he is his mother's child).

Newly-returned-to-OH Lisa and her friend Stephanie came by and visited with the boys who were sort of on their best behavior. There was some inappropriate chewing but what else can you expect from 5 week old pups? They also were visited by Wendy and Susie's mom Jan and the girls.

Over the river and through the woods to Grandmother's house we go.

Well, no river and no woods but today the boys had a day of adventure and were thankful for the experience :-) They had their first field trip to Mom's house. They were absolutely wonderful! There was not a moments hesitation by any of them going into a new situation. They weren't quite so sure of the car ride but settled in very quickly. There wasn't exactly play but certainly lots of interaction with Uncle Rocket who likes them but doesn't seem exactly sure how to play with them. Great Grandma Sunny seems to think puppies are very overrated. Been there...Done that! The McGiblets romped, investigated and in general had a great time on their outing. They are definitely a ready for the world bunch today!

The boys didn't really care though b/c while I was sleeping from the night before they had Drew and Henry home which means all day ouside of the box causing chaos. Surprise! Surprise! The weather forecast was wrong! So we had lots of outside time again today. It was colder but the pups still had a good time out there. Henry and I started out the day picking up the rest of the leaf piles. Jack thought he would help a little bit. He's hard to see but he is in there.

Apparently they psyched me out yesterday with the good eating. Today was just so so. On the other hand, they have all decided the stairs are not an obstacle to worry about and neither is the door to the whelping box :-P

Updates For the Last Few Days

Between 4 days of dogs shows and working the weekend there wasn't much time for anything so no posts. Thank goodness it was a very local set of shows. I am showing a bitch I co-own, Kai, who won her first major and a single point. She's half way to her championship.

So what have the boys been up to? The weather has been BEAUTIFUL so lots of outside time and working on coming down the stairs. Quick has nailed coming down the stairs followed closely by Nimble. Jack on the other hand has going up the stairs better then the other two but still screams bloody murder over going down them. He does respond well to the showers of praise he gets for coming down so he is getting better about it. Tomorrow is supposed to be rainy so our time on big stairs and outside is going to be limited. Looks like we may just go for different parts of the house and carpeted regular stairs for the next few days.

Today, FINALLY!, they ate with gusto. The addition: baby food veggies - green beans, peas, carrots, squash and a small amount of chicken. Next week I'll grind my own veggies for them but this seemed like an easy transition to the real thing. Pixie still nurses but maybe only 2 or 3 times a day/night.

Tomorrow they are halfway through their journey with me. 5 weeks. It is kind of sad now to think that after all of this anticipation, planning and waiting that they will be leaving. What three can do is going to keep me hopping!

Visitors today were Susie and her girls. One of them, though she smiles a lot, always hides her smile when my camera comes out! I managed to capture that smile once today! But my storage with Picasa seems to be an issue so I will have to post it once it gets worked out. Apparently I can post video so here are a couple from today. I need to bottle the girls so that I can have them for every litter. Young children are worth their weight in gold for socializing puppies. I've never heard a grown up squeal like this! Too cute!

In addition to Susie and the girls, Wendy and her girls came by. Her girls are the 4 legged variety - Grandma Lannie and Auntie Aerial. Lannie has decided that Pixie has joined the Momma Club and no longer feels the need to show who is the boss. Aerial was particularly sweet and gentle with the boys.

BTW, Nimble hopped up and went on his merry way after flipping over on his back. They have had lots of experience with being pushed here there and everywhere from their mother Pixie.

Ohhhh! How could I forget?!? Jack-In-The-Box was Jack-Out-Of-The-Box this morning. He didn't repeat it all day so maybe it was an accident so we'll wait to say he has the skill mastered.

Usually around 4 or 5 weeks I notice some increased tough guy activity in the boys. It doesn't last but the first time I saw a 4 week old puppy hump one of his litter mates I was a little concerned to say the least. Today was that day for the McWanna-Be-Stud-Muffins. All three of them have been playing Who's the Baddest in the Box. Pushing shoulders, scrapping, mounting, and to top it off my favorite thing (really it is) - Nimble kicked his little back feet after he pottied. I know it is a goofy thing to like but today he is my favorite! It only happened once but it was very cute!

Since Great Uncle Roady is not going to be a playmate to the pups, Uncle Rocket came in to meet his nephews. Despite being particularly attracted to other dogs he thought these guys were only slightly interesting. I say give it a few weeks when they get to the real play stages and they might actually be dogs to him.

On their second time out today they actually all pottied and started doing some playing. Imagine how much fun they would have if it was actually pleasant out there! I do wish it was warm out.

It looks like Jack might be the first out of the box. If he would ever shut up long enough to really figure it out!

4 Weeks Old Today!

It it amazing what can happen in 4 weeks time. 4 weeks ago they were cute little squirmy gerbils. Today they are actually running, barking and growling with each other. Their personalities are developing and they are changing each day. Quick has been having a down day today. His play spurts have been briefer than the other boys and his sleep times longer than theirs. Yesterday was Jack's day to be the sleepy one.

All of them are seriously resisting the eating routine. Jack has caught up with Nimble in how much he is willing to try but they are all holding out for Pixie's super milk. I don't really force wean so this may take a bit more time to convince them that this is the way to go. It's probably b/c there aren't that many puppies to make them desperate. I think I'm going to finally sleep in my own bed tonight vs the cot next to the box so Pix will probably just check on them during the night. OR she may be like me and enjoy a restful night without disturbances :-).

It was pretty rainy today so no outside time but they spent most of the day exploring the family room.

Another trip outside today. It's not as pretty out as the other day but we'll take not windy, not rainy and not freezing as an OK day to go out. They all did better than the last time and actually did some investigating when they weren't crying :-). Pixie is convinced that when they are outside they can play like she and Roady do. It's kind of intimidating for the little things when those two are bouncing around and wrestling.

They are much more intense about their own play with each other and with Pix. Ears are fair game. Maybe that is why they are getting so much longer!

I forgot to mention that they are walking much better on the slicker floor that is outside of their box. I also changed their potty area to just newspaper instead of a thin fabric b/c they are better able to handle the slick nature of the paper. There is still the occasional backward slide but for the most part they are doing really well. They showed off their paper potty finesse when Caren was visiting. All three woke up from their sleep on the bed to find the paper that was out and potty on it. What good puppies! Only 3 weeks old and already they have the "Get Busy" spot picked out.. at least today they do!

The Great Outdoors

Sorry I missed yesterday. The day after working is always hard to do the extra stuff like blogging. So lots of pictures today. This morning started off quietly with play session and a toy kill by Jack. Breakfast by Quick and Nimble - Jack still thinks it is a bad idea. The the biggest part of today was a little trip outside. The weather was so perfect we had to do it even though they are several days younger than I prefer. Considering their age they got a little stressed but handled it pretty well. I didn't want their first time out to be cold, wet and potentially scary.
The boys had two visitors today - Terri and her daughter Sam. Finally, I found an orange baby collar. Nimble is a new lime green but he looks good in it. I have been having the hardest time finding orange so we'll take whatever shade of green. They ended the night hanging out in the family room, trying a little dinner, getting snuggles and finding the sheepskin throw. Jack thought that was a fun treat made just for puppies.

The Day The Teeth Arrived!

The teeth have finally made an appearance! Maybe that is why Jack was such a complaining, whining beast last night. They have all been a little whiny today and oddly have been sleeping together on one side of the box since last night. Poor babies.

Visitors today were Susie and the girls as well as her older daughter, Janey, Janey's boyfriend and Wendy. The puppies tried out their first sample of food. Nimble and Quick actually got several bites of it. Jack said "No way can that possible be food!" Tomorrow will be a better day!

Happy 3 week birthday today! Everyday they are bigger and cuter. This morning they had weights and nails done followed by more cuddling, eating and sleeping. Pixie is going for a run. Walking on the ceramic tile. It is slick so it can be difficult to manuever when they are first walking. It didn't seem to be a problem for this crew. I had them out when I was cleaning up the blankets and they went exploring.

What A Good Boy Am I?

So yesterday slipped by with no entry on the blog :-( But the gist of the day was that they are playing harder but still sleeping and eating a lot. The box changed a bit to adjust to their beginning potty training. It is hard to tell from the photo but there is only newspaper beneath the light blue bedding. The other now has two layers of the egg crate foam so it is a little squishier which Pixie loves. There is a little step down to the "potty" area. I start out with fabric there so they have good traction. Next week when their legs are better under them I'll switch it out to just newspaper. Already the boys are doing most of their pottying in this area.

Today started off with a visit from Kelsey, Patrick and Kelsey's brother Nathaniel. I took advantage of their visit as a time to change the bedding and have puppies out of the box on a blanket. Pixie was of course convinced that they were here only to see her. Pups were ok with the change of location and do like being cuddled. My dad's friend came over and while he isn't into dogs at all, he does wear more cologne than anyone who has come to visit so far so the pups were exposed to a new smell and sounds if not exactly a new person.

The amount of bedding changes is about to ramp up. Puppies are peeing larger amounts and are starting to walk away from where the sleep - Good puppies! So the potty training begins. Pix is great about cleaning up most of it though. Good Momma-dog!

Snuf Snuf Snuf! Oink Oink Oink!

The primary noise when they are awake is snuf snuf snuf. They stumble around (can it really be walking when if you take too quick of a step you roll off of your feet?) smelling everything. Then of course the other awake noise besides the random squeak is the eating oinking.... my favorite. Sleeping noises are the random squeaks bordering on barking and lots of groaning. Occasionally there is a scream that sounds like someone is being actively injured. I think it actually means - "Oh my goodness! I'm a McTurtle! I've fallen and I can't get up!" Almost always the screaming puppy is on his back trying to roll back over.

We had the girls and Susie visit along with Wendy. The puppies like their new toys. Thanks girls!

So a lack of sleep means I don't post an update. But it does mean there might be two posts the next day. So here is number one.
They have started "playing" with stuff that is around them. Quick (blue) started a few days ago by chewing on Pixie. Nimble (green) and Jack (orange) came on with a vengeance today and Nimble has turned into a little McPit puppy chewing on Pixie, me, and randomly a toy he has come across in the box. All of the chewing is the result of them teething. Not a single tooth has actually erupted but there are new nubs in there. Ears are opening more and they are definitely little vizslas versus random red dogs. Primarily though they sleep and sleep and sleep some more.

The Eyes Have It!

Nimble can see! Well, it's probably pretty blurry but his eyes are finally open and they all seem to be hearing sounds which can be a little shocking to them. Nimble is "watching" TV with Drew right now. Drew gave a little whistle and Nimble startled.

I came home from work this am and Quick also has his eyes fully open! Nimble has glimmers of both eyes peaking so I expect him to be completely bright eyed by tomorrow am if he follows his brothers' example but today he is the last of the Three Blind Mice. Jack and Quick have become champion walkers. Jack also just came over and pooped on his mother's leg. That is just gross though in a way thoughtful because he came to her and was in an easy to reach location. They have been without collars because they outgrew what I had on them. Will re-collar them tomorrow with 2 week weigh-in.

They are walking a little better - well, Jack and Quick are. Nimble actually is better he's just such a walrus it's hard to hoist all of it up for walking. Eyes and ears are the same. How did it happen so quickly? I left the house for about 2 hours. I had been playing with puppies and Pix before I left. Came back home and BAM! Jack has both eyes almost completely open! Amazing since usually they open a little peek at the inside corners. Not this one! FYI, I'm probably not going to get too many pictures for the next couple of days so they don't have the flash going off on their newly opened eyes. Jack and Quick are walking better. Nimble is about the same but I haven't seen too many walrus move well on land.

Funny Observation

I had to work last night so Henry took my place at the puppy box through the night. In the past he has never had to do this. Other than me sleeping by the puppies for 3 - 4 weeks he hasn't had to worry about what I'm doing there. So last night he graciously agreed to take my place. I didn't get a break early last night to call and see how things were going and there were no frantic calls to me. I figured everything would be ok b/c I'd actually gotten some decent sleep for the previous two nights.

This was not so for Henry. Apparently he hasn't listened to the differences in their squealing and squeaking. And it kept him up until about 3. Someone would squeal, he would check. Someone would squeak, he would check.Finally there was silence from about 3 to 5 when he had to get up for work. When I talked to him this morning his comment was that caring for the puppies through the night was more stressful than caring for Drew when he was a baby. I suppose there wasn't the possibility that someone was going to step on or roll on Drew :-)

Quick lowdown on what has happened today:
Everyone got a bath this am when I got home. One teeny tiny flea on Quick :-(
Bedding changed out completely
The boys are "walking". There is daylight under their bellies today. I tried to not so successfully get it on video. The daylight is fleeting.
Pixie went for a run this afternoon. She was much more settled afterward. She seems to think there should be something to compensate for me being gone all night.

Have tornado, will travel. Off to the basement we went this afternoon. Tornado sirens were going off and a nasty line of storms blew through our area. Once again the pups were no worse for wear. They tried out a new bed, had a snack and a little nap before we went back upstairs to Home Sweet Home. Thank goodness there are only 3. Roady might have had to share his bed too and I don't think he would have liked that. This was probably as close as he wants to get.

Quick's rate of gain is increasing (2.4 oz yesterday) but it doesn't look like it can even begin to catch Nimble's (2.9 yesterday). He's trying though. Jack was a little slower yesterday at slightly less than a 2 oz gain.
Eyes and ears are starting to loosen up a little. Now instead of looking like their eyes are tightly shut they look like they are just sleeping.

One of my favorite puppy noises is when the group eats together and gets major letdown of milk causing group oinking. Very cute!

Kelsey and Patric visited this afternoon. I managed to not get pictures but they'll be back.

New weights today are:
Nimble (green) 1lb 5.8oz
Quick (blue) 15.4oz (He gained 2.2 ounces from yesterday)
Jack (orange) 1lb 2.3oz

Roady Had a Happy Moment

Still obsessed with the flea issue I bought a flea comb last night and gave everyone a once over. Roady was convinced it was some horrible torture. He prefers his groom zoom. Pixie liked it and the pups just wiggled around like usual. No fleas with the comb but I got one this am and picked up some diatomacious earth today to treat Roady, the house and yard. SIGH Why now?

Roady's buddy Ed came by today under the pretense of seeing Lannie's grandpups but really it was to visit Roady.


There was a little puppy action going on.

On the other hand, Wendy was pretty much here just to see the puppies.
